Farming has been a part of Cumberland County's history since the early settlers arrived in the 1600s. Today, there are still many farms in operation, producing everything from vegetables and fruits to dairy products and meat. The county is also home to several farmers' markets, where local residents can buy fresh produce and other items directly from the growers.

The fishing industry is also an important part of Cumberland County's economy. Commercial fishing boats head out from Portland each day, bringing back lobster, crab, fish, and other seafood that is then sold locally or shipped elsewhere. There are also several charter companies that take tourists out on excursions to catch their own dinner. In addition to these businesses, there are numerous jobs available at the state-run Department of Marine Resources offices located in Portland.
