There are several major employers in the transportation sector in Anchorage. The Port of Anchorage is one of the largest employers in the state and handles much of the cargo coming into Alaska. The public school system is another big employer in town with over 4,000 employees working for them. The municipality also employs over 2,700 people between their police force and fire department.
