There are many different types of transportation job opportunities available in Columbia. Some of these include bus drivers, taxi drivers, and even Uber drivers. Each type of job has its own set of requirements, but all are relatively easy to obtain with a clean driving record.
Bus Driver
The City of Columbia offers several different types of bus routes including fixed-route buses and paratransit buses. Fixed-route buses operate on regular schedules and follow specific routes throughout the city, while paratransit buses provide door-to-door service for those who are unable to use the fixed-route system. Bus drivers must have a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with passenger endorsements in order to operate any type of bus within the city limits. In addition, all bus drivers must complete a training program approved by the Missouri Public Transit Association (MPTA). The City of Columbia offers an MPTA-approved training program for new bus drivers which takes place over a period of two weeks. Upon successful completion of the training program, candidates will be required to pass a written exam and road test before being eligible for employment.
Taxi Driver
Taxi services in Columbia are provided by multiple private companies who each maintain their own hiring standards and requirements. However, all taxi drivers must possess a valid driver's license with no more than three moving violations within the past three years. In addition, most taxi companies will require applicants to pass a background check prior to being hired. Taxi drivers typically work long hours and may be required to work nights or weekends depending on customer demand. Uber Driver
Uber is a ridesharing service that allows customers to request rides through an app on their smartphone or tablet.
