For those interested in working directly with passengers, both taxis and buses are always hiring drivers. Taxi companies will require applicants to have a clean driving record and pass a criminal background check. Some companies may also require drivers to have previous experience driving a commercial vehicle. Bus drivers must possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), although some training is usually provided by the employer. In addition to transporting passengers around the city, bus drivers may also be responsible for collecting fares and assisting passengers with disabilities.

Metro is another popular option for those looking for passenger-oriented jobs; however, most positions will require applicants to take an entrance exam before being hired. For example, prospective train operators must complete written exams that test their knowledge of safety procedures and customer service skills, among other things Operators will also be required to undergo on-the-job training once hired. Once they successfully complete the program requirements, they can apply for open positions. Working for Metro does come with some perks; all employees receive free rides on Metrorail and Metrobus, as well as discounts on parking at Metro garages and reduced rates on Amtrak trains.
