Life Underwriter assesses risk though evaluation of an individual’s medical history, financial background, and other information pertinent to the decision. Reviews information obtained during the application process and makes a final determination to issue, decline, rate up or postpone underwriting decision.
Able to interpret medical record data or financial reports to classify risks; researches nonmedical and medical impairments by using reinsurance manuals and medical literature. Ability to use critical thinking, i.e. reflective and independent thinking, to solve business challenges.
Uses tact and empathy to form relationships with field personnel.
Compensation Minimum:
$52,300 / year
Compensation Maximum:
$83,800 / year
Compensation may vary based on the job level and your geographic work location.

Primary Accountabilities
Applies insurance and risk concepts to underwrite new business for all life products.
Considers risk pools when assigning preferred classes and table ratings.
Establishes rapport with agents and sales management in their area of operation. Serves as a resource for the field force and sales management.
Identifies when reinsurance may be required and submits for facultative acceptance.
Escalates more complex risk to experience team members or manager for guidance.
Preferred Qualifications Based on experience, candidates can be considered at a higher level.
Previous knowledge and understand of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease entities and their classification for life risk selection preferred
Strong PC and typing skills, MS Office skills for data capture.
Ability to plan, prioritize work, set and achieve goals.
Effective oral and written skills.
Completion of LOMA (FLMI) or FALU coursework is a plus.

Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills to review complex cases and/or review lines or books of business
Demonstrated experience making independent decisions with regard to underwriting cases
